Our next meeting will take place on Monday, May 9, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM in the meeting room at the Cold Smoke Coffeehouse just off 19th and Oak.
In April, we studied a version of italic that is upright, medium weight, and relatively narrow. We used a 45-degree pen angle, mostly, and looked at places where a pen lift or change in pen angle would refine the letters. During the coming month, our homework is to explore variation possibilities with a broad-edge pen.
I brought some examples of this version of italic in use, and shared some work I have done so far this year in a private Facebook group that encourages a calligraphic response to a weekly prompt.
On May 9, we will continue our study of the italic hand, changing up various aspects of the hand to get some variations. If you missed the May meeting, no worries. Feel free to jump in this month.
Bring a 2mm pen, ink, practice paper, and the same guidelines we’ve been using (see below). We’ll see what variations we can come up with, within those parameters.
And don’t forget to bring any interesting projects you’ve been working on. We want to see them!
